Living in Balance Curriculum

Finding the right support throughout your addiction treatment process can be overwhelming and hard. With so many options available to you, how do you know which one will work best with your personal substance abuse problem?

Skypoint Recovery is here to help. All substance abuse recovery programs boil down to two main steps: medical detox and mental health services. At our location in Akron, Ohio, the staff at Skypoint Recovery is committed to guiding you toward the individualized combination of care that you need. From the moment you first give us a call, you will know you don’t have to figure this out alone anymore.

The Living in Balance curriculum is a 12-step program designed to help you better connect the parts of your life that become disjointed by substance use disorders (SUD). Originally published by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation in 2003, it has since become a cornerstone for substance abuse treatment worldwide.

Read on to learn about how we apply the Living in Balance curriculum at Skypoint Recovery Ohio – and you can begin your substance abuse treatment journey today.

What is Living in Balance (LIB)?

The Living in Balance (LIB) curriculum is an evidence-based approach to substance abuse treatment. LIB combines a wide variety of drug rehabilitation practices, drawing from cognitive behavioral, experiential, and twelve-step approaches.

At its most basic, the Living in Balance curriculum is intended to help a person struggling with addiction reclaim areas of their life that have become neglected due to substance abuse. By intentionally recalibrating one’s life, the Living in Balance curriculum teaches that a person can achieve a life of recovery. This is done in the Living in Balance program through a combination of group education and individual therapy.

There is no one specific author attached to the LIB program. But since it was first devised in 2003, it has since been developed to integrate rising issues among people struggling with substance use disorders, such as opioid abuse, older recovering adults, and medication-assisted treatment. The Living in Balance curriculum can also be personalized for those who are struggling with co-occurring disorders or who are in need of further recovery management.

12 Core Sessions of Living in Balance

The Core Program of the Living in Balance curriculum follows the 12-step model used in a lot of addiction recovery support groups.

Here are the 12 core sessions included in the Living in Balance program, as posted on the Hazelden Publishing website:

  • Session 1: Definitions, Terms, and Self-Assessment
  • Session 2: Alcohol and Other Drug Education
  • Session 3: Triggers, Cravings, and Avoiding Relapse
  • Session 4: Planning for Sobriety
  • Session 5: Alcohol and Tobacco
  • Session 6: Spirituality
  • Session 7: Sex, Alcohol, and Other Drugs
  • Session 8: Stress and Emotional Well-Being
  • Session 9: Skills for Reducing Stress
  • Session 10: Negative Emotions
  • Session 11: Anger and Communication
  • Session 12: Relapse Prevention Basics

As is true for many other 12-step programs like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous, the Living in Balance program is grounded in spiritual language and a relationship with the Christian God. However, these curriculum sessions are more based on the belief that humans are innately spiritual beings who crave community than it is on a required Christian faith. This is also why group therapy and interpersonal relationship building are a critical part of our recovery work at Skypoint Recovery Ohio.

By making intentional room for one’s mental health and spiritual life, a person struggling with substance abuse can begin moving from a life of addiction to a life of recovery and sobriety.

How does Living in Balance Help in Moving from a Life of Addiction?

Through recent research on addiction, substance abuse has come to be understood as a biophysical process. This means both the brain and the body are impacted by a person’s regular addictive behaviors.

The Living in Balance curriculum is designed to specifically address a person’s relationship with their mind and body, then understand what in their life can trigger cravings. By better understanding what causes you to struggle with addiction, you can also develop healthy and more balanced alternatives to substance abuse in the future.

One of the other great benefits of the Living in Balance curriculum is that it leaves room for a person’s lifelong commitment to recovery. Most individuals will require some form of substance abuse support for the rest of their lives, whether this be in the form of individual therapy or sober living communities. No matter where you are in your recovery journey, the Living in Balance curriculum can be tailored to your individual needs and help you develop real-life tools to continuously choose alternatives to addiction in your daily life.
